Hyères 2400 years of history

the town’s Ancient origins date back to the 4th century B.C. when the Greeks set up Olbia, a commercial outpost on the shores of the Mediterranean. Perched upon the hill, the ruins of the medieval castle built in the 11th century by the local Lords of Fos dominates the colourful labyrinth of streets of the old town. Hyères has kept the rich facades of its 19th century palaces and grand hotels that used to welcome kings, queens, artists and writers seeking the mild winters of the French Riviera. Throughout its history, the town has always abounded in exotic gardens. Four of them secured the quality label “Extraordinary gardens” and are now open to the public.
In the twentieth century, the Villa Noailles attracted the artistic avant-garde to town. Today it remains an important place of creativity in fashion, photography, architecture and design.
